This current season of anime airing has one prominent title that somewhat being waiting by many fans. Especially those who dearly waited for a sequel or continuition from the KyoAni‘s best selling anime of all time, I think, should be right? For a single season? Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu DVD sales were almost hundred of thousands copies being sold per volume. Well, if you point out K-On!, both seasons had a total of more than 500,000 copies sold. But that’s KyoAni. How about Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu (The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan) which its anime being produced by different studio?
The new series that focusing on Nagato Yuki is a spin off from a certain part in the original story itself where Nagato Yuki having a different personality. Something that some people nowadays kinda adore. Heck, the idea itself emerged during the old days when people think that version of Nagato is moe and it’s materialized when Puyo decided to draw a manga out of it. When the materialization in form of animation is getting a green-light, KyoAni wasn’t interested. Perhaps because they have different projects. Satelight picked it up while retaining the same seiyuu from Haruhi Suzumiya.
Satelight, the studio that is well known from Macross Frontier, Symphogear and Log Horizon, is surely not a bad studio. But that’s not the problem. For those who disliked this series, it is actually within the context itself. That’s not Nagato Yuki.
Quite, stoic and an introvert is what Nagato Yuki known for. It is amusing to see her moving her hands or gesture rather than speaking or with monotone answers. It’s simply a serene moment especially when seeing her alone, reading a book, at a side of the club room. Perhaps she’s kinda cold but she’s very intelligent to provide solutions and answers to Kyon for instance. She does resemble Ayanami Rei from Evangelion.
The essence of Nagato’s moeness, at least for me, is when she subtly acts something unusual for most of her part like that cardigan given to Kyon and also her reaction when Kyon told to her about her other personality during The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi. That feeling of her towards Kyon that we are not really sure how to describe it. Basically, she does have something for Kyon or she does only reacting like a human.
Nagato Yuki-chan? Too much emotions. Sure, cute and stuff. But her originality is missing. Plus, Kyon in this series is kinda like normal school boy who also shown emotions whenever with Yuki-chan. I missed that punny Kyon while talking to himself. More importantly, Chihara Minori, the one who gave that cool voice for Nagato Yuki earlier.
I was a great fan of her. I bought her CDs and DVDs including her very first photobook. But why the change of heart? I really loved her earlier songs like Paradise Lost, for example. Great, diva-like voice. Somehow when some staff left from her band and perhaps after getting past 30 years old of age, her manager decided to change her path. Pretty much dislike her high pitch voice when singing. It depends on song, really, yet her newer songs are kinda different from previous albums. Maybe when staffs at the background changes, the music became different. And the worst for me is when she suddenly going to path of gravure.
I am not really that of a holy man for dissing gravure idols. But I just dislike looking people I adore in swimsuit. I am not sure how to say this but let me give another example that I dislike those AKB48 girls. In most cases, I love looking at girls with cute costumes rather than doing cheaply showing off their bodies. Well, if talking realistically about how background idol industry works, it surely frightened naive fans. I do know and realized about it but it’s all about how we love and support a person until that person suddenly doing something that we don’t like.
Of course, I will still be watching that unNagato anime. Not like I am buying anything.
