Well, someone asked at a certain popular website in the world about this purity thing. Yeah, what’s with certain people obsession with the female character in any anime to have purity? Before I go deep with that question, how about we look at what’s the meaning of it. When people were blessed with new anime series that mainly have their characters designed to please the viewers mainly from males, it is usually to give false hope for this hopeless people with their imaginary beings. The booming of this anime materials from Japan led the otaku to another level that normal people might be unable to comprehend. As we all know that Star Wars gave the world a new meaning of figurine collection and it is normal for other kind of entertainment to proceed with such success over their own. But it was never thought by people previously sculpting a mere plastic models of sexy female characters like what we have now. It is not limited to figurines. It went over to other stuffs like mug or that infamous pillow cover, dakimakura. The affection of these people with these virtual characters has risen to another level. It’s the very details of those characters themselves.
Love and affection over anime characters are mostly seasonal. Each new season will lead the viewers with new characters. Unlike Hollywood, animation industry in Japan seldom to have original series by itself. Before a series gets animated, it is usually based on other media like manga, games or novel since it will certainly a really popular series to get such privilege being animated. So people would usually get to know how lovely and passionate or moe, whatever, with that certain characters when the feeling was build up during the days before animation. By loving those virtual characters, it means a real deal for these people to have a perfect (or some) soul mate.
This is something that led to a term that we called as waifu. Deliberately taken from English’s wife that changed into weaboo way of talking, it’s everyone’s business for having their own waifu (or waifus as nobody cares if you have polygamy over virtual stuffs). Literally, IT IS everyone’s waifu that being shared together although these denial-of-thinking people would claim that everyone have their own versions of the said characters. Let me get these people straight to the point: a lot of people are masturbating over that hentai images of your virtual sweet heart where some of them might printed out the pictures over A4 papers and sprayed their semen over it while you kept denying that pictures are not your version of waifu and just look alike. But it’s fine to me since I don’t care.
Well, back to the main topic. When it comes to the perfection of this imaginary beings, it’s like a norm to have these characters to be some virgins. Why? Uh, these girls are middle-schoolers. So? Were they single before this? Well yeah, supposed to be. Despite how cute they were before that no one actually able to court them? Well, yes. Even if they’re 1000 years old undead characters that stuck with that middle-schoolers body? Of course. Duh.
Since any kind of entertainments bring new kinds of genre and topic on each new era, recent popular subjects for anime are cute little girls that do nothing but cute stuffs. Moe if you would really love for me to say that. It’s somewhat a sickening affection over underage girl characters that has been spread over the world through Japan anime (although I have no real uneasiness with it as long as it stays as virtual stuffs). With a presumption from that underage girl matter, they’re thought to be as virgins. But like a point I stated earlier, they’re thought to be virgins despite they’re some celestial beings who live more than a millenia. In real world, men usually love to have women with big breasts. Well, just look back decades ago when western porns were flourished with artificial big boobs and whatnot while them Americans mocking Asian females for having small boobs. But things have already changed now in the past years.
In a relation with this virginity and purity matters, a great example would be that series called Kannagi. Some of you might already knew about it but some not so let me give a brief information about it. A guy carved out a tree trunk into a shape of a girl and then a girl appeared from it bla bla bla goddess bla bla bla have feeling bla bla bla she’s some past bla bla bla she’s actually had a boyfriend before bla bla bla it’s suggested that she is not a virgin anymore bla bl-.. wait there. That’s a revelation about a character that was told to fans that she’s not a virgin in the manga plus some flash back of her shown as pregnant in the anime which simply drove people mad. As in extreme otaku madness. They torn apart Kannagi manga that they have bought furiously upon that matter. So, purity is a big deal. Even over virtual person. Some others consider that as nothing deterrent as they prefer people with experiences. That’s also a form of fetish. And there are a lot of fetishes that we can get from anime or Japan in that matter.
Anime characters were shallow in the past years. Gradually things getting over with various kinds of forms and a lot more on character developments. Tsundere, dojikko, flat-chest and many more are kind of moe attributes that somewhat attracting in the new era of otakuism. Like someone pointed out, classic anime had more matured female characters that previous otaku didn’t care if they’re no longer virgins anymore. Rough girls and whatnot. Today’s anime series are slightly towards school girls with naiveté actions with selected character profiles. Truth to be told that a lot of recent otaku actually feel disgusted over busty female characters with lack of clothes compared to the ones with proper attire. Even I don’t really like those kind women in Queen’s Blade or Gurren Lagann.
Let me ask you this, do culture actually advance?
