iPhone Training at UTeM

Last week, my colleagues and I went to UTeM to give some sort of hands on training about developing applications on iPhone and iPod as well. It’s 3-day iPhone training. Usually for giving a training like Adobe Flash, one requires certificate or something equivalent but for Apple Developer, such thing doesn’t exist. Well, Apple tries to make thing easier for people to learn and spread to the others. So, three of us, including Reza and Hazmin, went to Melaka on Wednesday morning just after sahur.

Since UTeM is where I am currently undergoing my Masters Degree research, the attendees were people that some of them I knew. Actually, faculties and departments in UTeM have been moved to the new main campus (previously my faculty, FTMK, was at Cubic building or formerly known as Industrial Campus).

Being newbies in giving training, we made a mistake on the first day; we actually didn’t check the lab equipments. First, the lab is equipped with several iMacs, about 30 I guess. But, only 15 of them are Intel while the rest are Power PC. Second, all of them are Tiger version for their Mac OS X (10.4). Third, we have the iPhone SDK but, unfortunately, it only works on Leopard (10.5) and Intel computers. So, on the first day, we’re like giving talks on things that can be made out of developing apps on iPhone while in the same time finding the Leopard installer disc. Apparently, we had to install Leopard on all Intel iMacs along with the SDK up until night (around 11 pm and about 4 computers fully installed with everything).

Amin led the second day with hands-on training. Teaching on the basics of Xcode that included within iPhone SDK along with other developer’s tools. Well, he is the expert for UI tools for iPhone among us. From the basic Hello World to the UITableView and many more. He simply followed tutorials and examples from many resources. Of course, Objective-C is something new for these guys.

My part on the third day is Cocos2D engine on iPhone. You can get to know about the engine here. Suffice to say that the engine really useful to shorten up developments on iPhone while providing simplicity in codings (for example, Cocos Denshion can call out audio easily in one line of code instead of multiple declarations and strings in the traditional way). I had some problems earlier because the engine I installed on the lab’s computers are the latest version while the one I used previously was a version prior than that. Nevertheless, I was able to sort things out while showing things to them. Awesome. As the session ends about 5 pm on Friday, I rushed back to Bangi soon afterwards under an hour. Not sure if I got tickets for speeding. lol

  2. The training was a closed training for UTeM students/staffs. Well, basically it was my company providing the training sessions. If you would like to request some trainings, kindly forward it to my email.
